The 6th of November
by Pablo Solares Acebel
In The 6th of November, Pablo weaves a complex but fluid narrative that combines fragments of history with the intricacies of love, family, and politics. The reader is thrown into a world that is both exciting yet frightening, with characters that, at every turn, are as visible as the story itself.
Pablo’s narrative, to a large extent, defies every traditional definition of technique and style, as he lavishly combines and floats from realism to magic realism, masterly using both to tell this intricate story. The 6th of November is not for those who enjoy bland and conventional narratives; it is one of those little volumes that will stay around for a long time.
My View:
The 6th of November is a short novella written by Pablo Solares Acebal. Personally, even though it is short at under 150 pages, I took it slow devouring every detail set forth in the book. The novella starts off with an introduction or “Part 1” that is dated 1935. It tells of a budding romance between Gloria and Rulfo, two young souls wanting to be together. Gloria eagerly wants her families approval, including her father whom they both highly respect. The year of 1935 ends with heartache caused by her father. The story then continues to follow both Gloria and Rulfo through their lives, as they continue to try and be together despite obstacles in their path. We follow Gloria through her pregnancy, her parents disappointments, etc.
This novella, is easy to have become real- being written in that time of history still is being lived out today. The characters throughout the novella were full of emotion, especially when inner thoughts or private messages were expressed. I found myself lost within the pages, and connected well with the story.
