Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. This simple recipe for Chocolate Hazelnut Puppy Chow is the perfect snack of love. I remember many, many years ago when my brother came home from school with a new snack they had made that day. It was called “Puppy Chow”, he explained that it was almost like our favorite treat the original version of Chex Mix. The difference was they used melted chocolate chips, peanut butter, and powdered sugar.
To this day I remember the taste as it exploded in my mouth. At that second I had a new appreciation and new love for snacks made with Chex cereal. I am amazed today at how this simple recipe has evolved into a ever-changing flavor snack. The recipes are endless, variations are endless, but the recipe is almost always the same.
The Chocolate Hazelnut Puppy Chow has colors that just seem to inspire a Valentine’s Day theme. The simple ingredients and process make it easy for kids to give a big helping hand in creating the snack. There is no reason to purchase name-brand items, which is one of the things I really like in a snack recipe.
Hazelnut spread has become a staple in our cupboard for the past few years. The kids put it on everything- including celery. They were excited when they saw all the ingredients that were bought, not so excited that I told them we weren’t making it until it was closer to Valentine’s Day.
