Excerpt:
Ashley woke in a cold sweat. She remembered nothing of her time spent in the magical realm known as Fallenwood. Without the remembrance of her journey in Fallenwood, Ashley awoke as her former self, without the benefit of the lessons learned during her journey. That journey never existed, and her memory bank filled itself with everything she’d known before she left.
Ashley began living a normal life, as though Fallenwood didn’t exist at all. Now, visions slipped away into nothingness and she believed she’d only had a series of incredibly vivid dreams and nothing more.
Yet the heart keeps a remembrance of its own, and without Prince Edward, a cold loneliness sank to the core of Ashley’s blindly sought its cure.
Character Development & Where To Begin
By Leslie D. Soule
So where does an author begin, with character development? Well, I based my main character, Ash Kensington, on a younger version of myself. I’ve always been told to “write what you know”, and I certainly know my own thoughts and actions fairly well. So I’ve found that this is a good place to start. My other characters are more or less amalgamations of people Iactually know, or knew (some of the people are no longer with us, like the guy that Akaji is based on, in book 1 of the Fallenwood Chronicles). So far, I’ve based my villains on a couple of ex-boyfriends, and that’s worked out well (Akaji in book 1, and Draeon in book 3).
So I mostly take what I know or like about someone, mixed with a bit of the fantastical – an old friend becomes a wizard or a gypsy or a talking cat, for example. And then there are the characters that I don’t come up with at all, and those are the surprising ones that add quite a lot of depth. For example, I’ve participated for a few years now in the Brenda Novak’s Auction For Diabetes Research, and auctioned off a chance for a lucky winner to create their own character.
In the case of my most recent sci-fi novel, Hybrid Space (to be released soon – still editing!), an otter character named Charles and a tiger character named Rani were added to the mix through auctioning. Well, I already had a tiger character on-board the ship, so this added tension. Also, she wanted the tiger character to have pets, and I included that because I found it to be a delicious way to add conflict to the story (a HYBRID with PETS?!) and I included her boyfriend as well, for the same reason – I found that it added a delightful layer of conflict to the plot, this rebel hybrid having a human boyfriend. As for Charles, his story added to the depth of things because otters tend to congregate in family packs, and he was the only one on my ship, The Naming ships isn’t easy either, by the way. I chose The Empress because tea figures highly in my story and my dad talks about how you can have High Tea at The Empress hotel in Canada, and how expensive it is. As for the hybrids’ escape ship, I wanted it to be somethingsilly – like the total opposite of the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars. So I chose The Canary.
Anyway, I do base most of my characters on people I’ve seen, but it’s more of a cut-and-paste type of operation, really? Ever watch the movie Weird Science? It’s kind of like that.
