Next Exit, Dead Ahead by CW Browning
Alina Maschik expected to have a few quiet days alone in New Jersey.
She should have known better.
FBI Agent Stephanie Walker has a problem. Whenever Alina comes into town, someone ends up dead.
When the enigmatic Damon Miles follows, that count is doubled. Now, a mere week before Halloween, Stephanie’s main informant has gone missing. When part of him shows up in a reputedly haunted prison, the local attraction becomes the center of a macabre and baffling spectacle. As bodies start to fill the morgue, Stephanie must trust in Alina’s particular skill set to prevent further bloodshed. But that trust comes with a price, as Alina and Damon bring their own brand of trouble, uncovering a sinister web of deadly intrigue reaching far beyond the familiar South Jersey suburbs.
A prison haunted by tortured souls, a puzzling federal investigation, a rising body count, and a pair of deadly assassins…what could possibly go wrong?
Excerpt:
Jessica wrenched open the door and jumped into the car. Viper didn’t wait for her to get the door closed. She hit the gas and Jessica was thrown back in her seat as the door slammed shut with the force of the acceleration.
“Hang on, Ms. Nuñez,” she said calmly, reaching beneath her seat and pulling out her back-up 9mm. Lowering her window, she added, “You might want to keep your head down.”
Jessica looked at the gun, her eyes as wide as dinner plates, and slid down in the seat as low as she could go.
“Who are you?” she cried.
Viper glanced at her speed, then slammed on the brakes and pulled the emergency brake.
Spinning the wheel, she guided the sports car into a 180 degree spin until she was facing the pick-up truck.
“I’m the person saving your life,” she answered shortly.
Viper leaned to the side and aimed out the window, steadying her firing arm with her right hand.
Her eyes narrowed as she got a good look at the driver. It was the same man who had been watching Hawk Saturday morning. Exhaling, Viper fired off two rounds at the truck. The first one went through the windshield and hit the driver in the shoulder, while the second round buried itself in the front passenger tire. The truck swerved to the right violently and slammed into a parked car as the driver lost control.
Viper disengaged the emergency brake and hit the gas, accelerating past the truck while the passenger jumped out. He fired at the Camaro as she sped down the aisle. One of the bullets hit the back quarter panel before she turned the corner and shot out of the lot.
CW Browning was writing before she could spell. Making up stories in the backyard with her childhood best friend, imagination ran wild from the very beginning. When she moved to New Jersey from Kansas at the age of seven, those tales became written words as she adjusted to life on the East Coast.
Her first full-length novel was printed out on a dot-matrix printer at the age of eight. Through the years, the writing continued as an enjoyable past-time while she pursued other avenues of interest, attending Rutgers University and studying History. In time, though, it became apparent where her heart truly lie. CW still makes up stories in her backyard, but now she crafts them for her readers to enjoy.
She makes her home in Southern New Jersey, where she loves to grill organic steak and sip red wine on the patio.

Hi again 🙂
So how much research went into your work???
CW Browning says
Hi again! 🙂
I do quite a bit of research for each book I write. My goal is to get the details as close to reality as possible without taking away from the suspended believability that makes fiction so much fun to read. I know that as a reader myself, nothing kills a book faster for me than too much technical detail when I would rather just get on with the action and character interaction.
With Next Exit, Dead Ahead, the research was fun. The story is centered around a historical prison nearby in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. It was cool to delve into the history of such an interesting landmark. I am a bit of a history nut, though, so I probably spent more time delving into the past than I should have! 😉 I took the picture of the building on the front cover myself at the prison and my cover artist made it look awesome. This book was a lot of fun to research and write! 🙂

Thanks for hosting and being a part of my first blog tour! I’m excited for Next Exit, Dead Ahead to be featured here today. I do work outside the home without access to the internet, but I’ll be checking in this evening to answer any questions or comments. Next Exit, Dead Ahead is a fun fall Suspense story and I’m thrilled to be able to share it with everyone this close to Halloween!

My favorite part of the post was about how “CW Browning was writing before she could spell.” I am a Kindergarten Teacher and love to see children write with imagination and not worried about spelling! Great post. I plan to read CW Browning books now. The excerpt was awesome!
CW Browning says
Thanks Kay! I was certainly never short on imagination! LOL I was very lucky in the sense that my own Kindergarten teacher encouraged that. 🙂 I hope you enjoy the books! Thanks for stopping by!
